Theo HAZE（テオヘイズ）

現代美術家。神戸生まれ 神戸育ち。
3歳の頃から父と毎週のように六甲山に登り、山や自然の中に人生の大切な本質が凝縮されている感覚を育む。幼少期の愛読書はシュルレアリスム作家の画集と教育漫画『地獄と極楽』であり、鬼や死後の世界について思索を始めたのもこの頃である。

美術大学入学後まもなく、GUTAI（具体美術協会）の嶋本昭三と出会い、その精神に深く触れる。そこから自身が向き合うべきオリジナリティは西洋美術の模倣ではなく、日本の古層に眠る精神美の探究であると確信する。18歳のテオは、伝統芸能や神事の奥にそのエッセンスがあると直感し、津軽三味線を手に取る。芸能の原点である「門付」を体験するため路上で三味線を弾き、さらにエッセンシャルな体験を求めて、山奥の祠や自身の感覚で見出した聖地において奉納演奏を行うようになる。

その過程で、自身の父方のルーツが土師氏（古墳時代、殉死の風習を埴輪に置き換えた葬送を司る一族）であることを知る。折しも鬼の立体作品を制作し、無縁仏への奉納演奏を行っていた時期と重なり、母方のルーツである「村上海賊」の血とせめぎ合う内的相克こそが、自身の創作の原点であると自覚するようになる。

鬼の探究はやがて神の概念へと昇華され、作品は体験型の舞台芸術へと発展。発案・脚本・衣装・舞台美術までを手がけ、2025年大阪・関西万博にて《宇宙神楽》を発表。能楽の祖・秦河勝が66の神楽で天下泰平を祈った故事に着想を得て、《宇宙神楽66》プロジェクトを始動し、各地の聖地化を目指している。

Theo HAZE was born in 1978 in Kobe, Japan.
From the age of three, he regularly climbed Mt. Rokko with his father, developing an early sense that the essential truths of life are condensed within mountains and nature. During childhood, his favorite books were collections of Surrealist artworks and an educational comic on the afterlife, which sparked his lifelong contemplation of death, spirits, and the figure of the Oni (demon, ghost).

Shortly after entering art university, HAZE encountered Shozo Shimamoto of the GUTAI Art Association. Through this meeting, he realized that the originality he must pursue did not lie in imitation of Western art, but in the spiritual layers embedded in Japan’s ancient culture. At the age of 18, sensing that this essence was preserved within traditional performing arts and Shinto rituals, he began studying Tsugaru shamisen. Seeking the roots of performance, he played shamisen on the streets in the tradition of kadozuke (itinerant performance), and later offered ritual performances at remote mountain shrines and sacred sites discovered through his own intuition.

During this period, he learned that his paternal lineage traces back to the Haji clan — the ritual lineage that replaced ancient burial sacrifices with haniwa clay figures — while his maternal ancestry descends from the Murakami naval clan. This revelation coincided with his creation of sculptural works based on the Oni and his memorial performances for unclaimed spirits. The internal tension between these two ancestral streams became the spiritual foundation of his artistic practice.

日本の古代文化の奥深さは神道に表れており、その起源ははるか古代にまで遡る。それはシベリアにてシャーマニズムを信仰していた古代人たちのアニムズム的な宗教観と相通じるものである。HAZE氏は、日本の民話に繰り返し現れる「鬼」を善とも悪ともつかぬ存在として表現しており、紀元前あるいはミヤザキアニメの映画のような世界へと私たちを誘い、現代に疑問を投げかけている。HAZE氏は、日本のアーティストの若い担い手として、重要な役割を果たす人物の一人である。

“The SHINTO is the deepest expression of the ancient culture of Japan, its origin dates back to the beginning of time, it is similar to the animistic religions of ancient shamanistic peoples of Siberia. HAZE invites us to the meeting of its ONI (two-horn-monster), small recurring characters in the Japanese tradition, representations of good and evil spirits, very present in B. D. in animation at MIYAZAKI, they resist time.

HAZE is an important artist in the young Japanese generation.
