Theo HAZE（テオヘイズ）
現代美術家。神戸生まれ。
幼い頃から父と毎週末を山で過ごし、山に漂う「目には見えないけれど確かな何か」を感知する。3歳の愛読書は「地獄と極楽」。死や鬼について関心が芽生える。
美大時代に具体美術協会の嶋本昭三氏に師事した後、哲学や宗教を渉猟する傍ら日本人のアイデンティティとは何かを掘り下げるため18歳で鎮魂の楽器・津軽三味線を始める。日本各地の山奥にある磐座や古びた祠の前で三味線を演奏する事で、次第にその土地の人と繋がり古層のリアルな情報に触れ作品を作る、という円空のような活動を行って来た。そこで甘受した八百万の神の世界を作品に投影。
古来、宗教と美術は切っても切り離せない関係にあり、その根底にあるものが何なのかというのが原初の疑問だった。両者の根本にあるものは「精神の癒しである」と信じ制作している。作家にとって作品は「依り代」のようなもの。
20年来のこうした活動と内的探求から、非物質的領域と人間の可能性について東洋思想をベースに新表現主義やアールブリュイットを彷彿とさせる直観的筆致で表現した作風が、フランス、米国、香港でコレクションされる。
Contemporary artist. Born in Kobe, Japan.
Spent weekends in the mountains with his father from an early age. Perhaps because of this, he became sensitive to the memories of the land and the presence of things floating in the unvisible world.
Studied under Shozo Shimamoto of the Gutai Art Association at art school, and while still a student, encountered the Tsugaru shamisen, an instrument of repose. With instrument in hand, he delved into the ONIs (Japanese imaginary creature with two horns) and mythological legends of various regions with his unique antennae, and was invited to play the shamisen at shrines and temples throughout Japan, at sacred sites in Japan and abroad, at Ground Zero on 9/11, and in the disaster areas of 3/11, among others.
His style, in which he responds to the shamanic memory of the land with intuitive brush strokes reminiscent of neo-expressionism and art brut, has won him acclaim overseas in France, the U.S., and Hong Kong, and is collected in various fields.
His gaze seems to be half in this world and the other half in another.
Just as Hilma af Klint captured the world in atoms, Theo Hayes captures information about people, things, and places in “waves/quantum” (as he calls them). Sound is also a particle and a wave. Having played in a brass band in junior high and high school, he wrote lyrics on the theme of nature and people in his 20s, and has won prizes in contests sponsored by the Ministry of the Environment and other organizations.
Using sound to perceive, transform, and express latent information in the world through waves is something that comes quite naturally to him. He has recently been paying attention to quantum behavior and incorporating it into his works.

“The SHINTO is the deepest expression of the ancient culture of Japan, its origin dates back to the beginning of time, it is similar to the animistic religions of ancient shamanistic peoples of Siberia. HAZE invites us to the meeting of its ONI (two-horn-monster), small recurring characters in the Japanese tradition, representations of good and evil spirits, very present in B. D. in animation at MIYAZAKI, they resist time.
HAZE is an important artist in the young Japanese generation.
